Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Scheduling & Getting Started

  • All sessions are provided through a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. At this time, we do not offer in-person appointments.

  • Choose Book with Insurance to schedule through Headway, which automatically verifies your benefits. Through Headway, we currently accept Aetna, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Carelon Behavioral Health, Independence Blue Cross (PA – Virtual National Network), Quest Behavioral Health, UnitedHealthcare (Optum), Oxford (Optum), and Oscar (Optum).

If you do not have insurance, choose Book Without Insurance to schedule directly with Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health at our prompt-pay discount rates ($300 initial evaluation, $100 follow-up, $50 brief follow-up/refill).

Please note: If you plan to use your out-of-network benefits and request a superbill for insurance reimbursement, you are not eligible for the prompt-pay discount. In those cases, visits are billed at our standard fee schedule rates.

    • Initial Intake Appointment: 60 minutes.

    • Standard Follow-Up Appointment: 30 minutes.

    • Brief Follow-Up / Medication Refill: 15 minutes

      • Brief follow-up visits (15 minutes) are available for patients who are doing well on their current medication, require no changes, and have no new concerns.

Duration may vary depending on clinical need, but these are the standard appointment times.

  • If you are a prompt-pay discount (self-pay) patient, the payment method on file will be charged at the start of your appointment.

If you are using insurance through Headway, Headway will charge you any applicable copay or coinsurance. All insurance payments and billing are handled entirely by Headway. Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health does not process payments or billing for insurance patients at this time.

  • Our provider currently sees adults (ages 18 and older) for psychiatric medication management. If you are seeking care for a child or adolescent, we recommend connecting with a provider who specializes in pediatric or adolescent psychiatry to ensure they receive the most appropriate support.

  • We treat:

    • Mood Disorders: Depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder (maintenance only)

    • Anxiety Disorders: Generalized anxiety, panic, social anxiety, phobias, OCD (often best treated in combination with therapy)

    • Trauma-Related Disorders: PTSD, acute stress reactions, complex trauma symptoms

    • Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia, circadian rhythm disruptions, trauma-related nightmares

    • Substance Use Recovery: Supportive care for patients in early or sustained recovery (not acute detox)

    • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Adult ADHD (after proper assessment and confirmed diagnosis)

    • Other adult psychiatric conditions where evidence-based medication management is appropriate

  • We do not provide care for:

    • Active suicidal or homicidal intent

    • Acute crises or emergencies

    • Active psychosis or severe thought disturbances

    • Inpatient psychiatric stabilization or detox services

    • Psychiatric care for individuals under 18

If you need immediate help, please call 988, dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency department. Outpatient follow-up may be possible once you are stabilized.

  • Your first visit is a 60-minute comprehensive evaluation. We’ll review your medical and mental health history, current concerns, and goals for care. We may also discuss lifestyle factors, sleep, or other health conditions that can affect your mental well-being. A diagnosis may not always be made at the first visit.

Sometimes, lab tests or urine drug screenings are ordered to rule out underlying issues or ensure safe prescribing. In some cases, additional tools such as questionnaires, MindMetrix ($59), or QbCheck ($79) may also be recommended to clarify diagnosis and guide safe treatment.

Our priority in this first visit is to listen, understand, and begin building a plan that feels safe, realistic, and effective for you. If medication is prescribed, we will review how it works, possible side effects, and what to expect before starting.

  • Sometimes, yes.

Certain medications require baseline or routine labs and/or urine drug screening before starting and periodically during treatment to ensure safety. If necessary, these will be discussed with you in advance and explained in full.

If you’ve had lab work completed by another provider within the past 6 months (excluding urine drug screens), those results may be used if relevant and appropriate.

  • You’ll need:

    • A device with a camera and microphone

    • A reliable internet connection

    • A private, quiet space to speak openly

    • You’ll receive a secure, HIPAA-compliant link before each session

Please test your audio and video before each visit to avoid delays.

  • No. Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health provides psychiatric medication management but does not replace primary medical care. We recommend maintaining a relationship with a primary care provider for routine health needs, labs, medical treatment, and preventive care.

  • Yes, with your written consent, we can share treatment plans, updates, or lab results with other members of your care team to ensure your treatment is well-coordinated.

  • Due to licensing laws, we cannot provide telehealth services if you are physically located outside of New Jersey at the time of your appointment. Your session will need to be rescheduled if you are out of state.

If you are on vacation within the U.S. and left your medications at home, our provider may be able to send a prescription to a local pharmacy, but it is up to that state’s laws and the local pharmacist whether the prescription can legally be filled.

Before Your First Visit

Medications & Treatment

  • Possibly. Before continuing any medication, we will carefully review your history, current needs, and prior records to determine if continuation is clinically appropriate. This decision may depend on the specific medication, whether it is being used on-label or off-label, and overall safety considerations. Controlled substances require additional safeguards and are only prescribed when safe, appropriate, and compliant with state and federal guidelines.

  • Controlled substances are not routinely prescribed and are only considered for short-term use, when medically appropriate, and always on a case-by-case basis. These medications are never guaranteed, even if you have taken them previously.

Prescribing decisions are based on clinical safety, evidence-based guidelines, and current regulations.

Before any controlled medication is prescribed, the following may be required:

    • Review of prior medical and psychiatric records

    • Urine drug screening or other safety labs

    • A controlled substance treatment agreement

    • Regular follow-up appointments

    • Safe-use monitoring when indicated

Early refills, replacements for lost/stolen medication, or refills after missed appointments are not provided.

  • Your safety is always our top priority, so these medications are prescribed carefully, only when appropriate, and in compliance with state and federal law.

This includes medications such as benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax®, Ativan®), sleep medications (e.g., Ambien®), and buprenorphine-based treatments.

    • Before prescribing, we may require:
      Review of prior records

    • Urine drug screening or relevant labs

    • Regular follow-up visits

    • A signed controlled substance agreement

    Please note:

    • These medications are never guaranteed and are rarely prescribed at a first visit

    • Prescriptions cannot be issued if you are outside New Jersey during your appointment

    • Lost, stolen, or misplaced prescriptions cannot be replaced early

Benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics (e.g., Xanax®, Ativan®, Klonopin®, Ambien®) may be considered only for short-term use when clinically indicated. These medications are not used as long-term or primary treatment for anxiety or insomnia and require close monitoring. Long-term prescribing is not offered.

  • No. New Jersey law does not permit prescribing Schedule II stimulant medications via telehealth.
Because of this legal restriction, stimulant medications are not prescribed under any circumstances at Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health.

If stimulant therapy is clinically appropriate, we will provide a referral to an in-person prescriber who can legally manage these medications.

  • Please request refills at least 3 business days before you run out. Refills are typically managed during follow-up appointments, and most requests require at least a 15-minute visit to ensure safe prescribing.

Refills may only be provided if you are up to date with follow-up care. For safety reasons, early refills and refills for missed appointments are not provided. Replacement prescriptions for lost or stolen medications are considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Our visits include supportive discussion and coping strategies, but we do not provide full-length psychotherapy sessions. Medication management is the primary service offered.

We strongly recommend combining medication with ongoing therapy for the best outcomes. Therapy is especially helpful for conditions such as PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, chronic anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and others where deeper, structured work is beneficial.

If you are not already connected with a therapist, we can provide referrals to trusted providers.

  • We provide psychiatric support for patients in early or sustained recovery. If you are actively using substances, a higher level of care may be recommended before starting outpatient psychiatric treatment.

  • MindMetrix and QbCheck are objective assessment tools that may be recommended in some cases to clarify a diagnosis and guide treatment.

    • MindMetrix is a broad, adaptive mental health assessment that screens across more than 60 conditions. It helps identify co-occurring symptoms and ensures nothing important is overlooked. (Cost: $59, billed directly by the company)

    • QbCheck is an FDA-cleared, computer-based test that measures attention, activity, and impulsivity. It is especially useful when evaluating ADHD and can also track treatment response over time. (Cost: $79, billed by Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health after completion of the assessment)

These tools are not part of your visit fee with Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health. They are billed separately, and in some cases, may be required before prescribing certain treatments or to support diagnostic clarity.

  • Pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing looks at how your genes may affect your response to certain psychiatric medications. It can help reduce trial-and-error when choosing medications, especially for patients with complex treatment histories.

    • GeneSight® Psychotropic analyzes multiple genetic markers and reviews how your body may metabolize or respond to 64 FDA-approved psychiatric medications. It focuses on common treatments for depression, anxiety, ADHD, and related conditions. (Cost: $330 out-of-pocket if not covered by insurance)

    • Genomind® PGx is a broader panel that evaluates 15 pharmacodynamic and 11 pharmacokinetic genes, providing insights across more than 700 medications. This test may be especially useful for patients with multiple conditions or extensive prior treatment failures. (Cost: $599 out-of-pocket if not covered by insurance)

Both tests are simple and convenient. A kit is mailed directly to your home, where you collect a painless cheek swab and return it to the lab. Results are typically available within a few days, and we will review them together to see if they provide helpful guidance for your treatment plan.

These tests are optional and billed directly by the testing companies. Some insurance plans may cover part (or even all) of the cost. Results are reviewed collaboratively and can help guide, but never replace, clinical decision-making.

Appointments & Cancellations

  • Life happens, and we strive to keep care flexible while also respecting everyone’s time. To keep appointments available for all patients, I follow these attendance guidelines:

Late cancellations/reschedules: If you cancel or reschedule less than 24 hours before your appointment, a $50 fee will be charged. This fee is not billable to insurance.

No-shows: If you miss your appointment/arrive too late, you will be billed the full session fee.

    • 15-min visit → up to 5 minutes late allowed

    • 30-min visit → up to 10 minutes late allowed

    • 60-min visit → up to 15 minutes late allowed

(If you do not join within the grace period, the session will be closed and counted as a no-show.)

Telehealth attendance: Your clinician will remain on the call only for the grace period. After that time, the session will be ended and billed as a no-show.

Payment: All outstanding fees must be paid before scheduling your next appointment.

Thank you for helping us keep appointments accessible to everyone.

  • No. Sessions end at the originally scheduled time to avoid delaying other patients. You will still be responsible for the full session fee.

  • You can reschedule or cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment without a fee. Rescheduling or canceling within 24 hours is treated as a late cancellation and will incur a $50 fee.

  • If your video disconnects, try to reconnect to the session right away.

If you cannot reconnect within a few minutes, check your email or phone, as you may receive a message with next steps.

If the issue can’t be fixed quickly, we may complete the session by phone or reschedule. To help avoid this, please test your internet connection and device before your session begins.

Communication & Emergencies

  • You can send secure messages through our patient portal for non-urgent matters. Messages are typically answered within 1–2 business days and should be used only for brief, non-urgent questions. Medication changes or new clinical concerns generally require a follow-up appointment.

Urgent or emergency concerns should be directed to 988, 911, or the nearest emergency department.

  • No. Thrive & Shine Behavioral Health is an outpatient telehealth practice. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency department.

  • Form completion is considered on a case-by-case basis and may require additional appointments or documentation. Some forms may need to be completed by a specialist or your primary care provider. Forms are only completed if clinically appropriate and after an established treatment relationship.

    We do not complete:

    • Court-ordered evaluations

    • Custody evaluations

    • Forensic assessments

    • Long-term disability applications

    • Any documentation requiring an evaluation beyond the scope of outpatient psychiatric medication management

  • We recognize pets can play an important role in comfort and support. ESA letter requests are considered carefully, and only when clinically appropriate after an established treatment relationship. Requests for ESA letters may require additional appointments or documentation.

We do not complete legal evaluations (e.g., court-ordered, custody, forensic assessments).

  • All sessions are conducted using HIPAA-compliant platforms. Your health information is kept private and will only be shared with your consent or when required by law.
